| The peace summit started on the 7th
of December in Delhi. It was inaugurated by the president
of India, Dr. A.P.J.
Abdul Kalam.

Leaders of different religions participated
in the summit: Buddhism, Christianity, Confucianism,
Hinduism, Islam, Jainism, Sikhism, Taoismyodra, Trianism,
Vaisnavism (represented by Iskcon and the Vrinda Society)
and Bahai.
Leaders from these different faiths introduced many
topics at the summit. The main aim of the meeting was
to bring
all the religions together to cooperate and join hands
to bring peace and harmony to the world.
Iskcon
GBC member Srila Bhakti Swarup Damodar Maharaj was
one of the
official delegates among the organizers. The main
topics of the summit were as follows:

Buddha Temple, Laxmi Narayan Temple, Synagogue,
Bahai Temple
and Iskcon Temple.
Group II went to Sacred Heart Cathedral, Bhai
Vir Singh Sahitya Sadan, Ramakrishna Mission,
Jain
Temple
and Gurudvara Shisha Ganj.)
The essence of the whole
summit was that the practice of religion does
not create problems related to
the environment, ecology, poverty and so
on. Most of the problems are because of selfishness,
egoism, poor
communication and not having a good relationship
and understanding about others and fighting for
regional self- interests against
other groups.
It was also mentioned that
all religions talk
about peace and harmony, non violence, kindness,
fraternity, mercifulness etc. All people
have a religion,
but many members generally start fighting
and making conflicts within their practice.
During
the inaugural ceremony of the Summit, his excellency
the President of India Dr. APJ
Abdul
Kalam recited words from Srimad Bhagavatam and
spoke about the
values of the Vaisnava Practice. He stressed
brahmacari life for the benefit of human values and
to control the senses. He said that when
people have no control over their senses and want to
gratify them
and are not able to do so, then they become angry
and aggressive and then conflicts arise. The honourable
president
also spoke about being merciful not only to human
beings but also to animals, and he mentioned the values
of vegetarianism.

On the last day of the meeting there
was a grand
celebration in the Gandhi Smriti Park. His
Holiness, The Dalai Lama was the chief guest of the program.
The Dalai Lama
said that the whole problem on the world is
people
looking for faults in others instead of looking
for faults within themselves. If people start looking
for faults
within themselves and try to make themselves
better, then there will be no more problems in the
world.
Finally
the meeting ended with the conclusion that
to create harmony and solidarity between the inter-religious
groups,
people should become educated. Especially
the
young generation should take the responsibility
and work
together to bring solidarity and harmony
to the world.
At the Summit, different religious groups performed
their musical concerts. The Sikhs were the
main group to present their program. The
organizer was Dr. Mohinder Singh, a
sikh person. There was a short performance
of all religious prayers daily. The
organizers managed everything very nicely
for the participants. The participants were very
friendly and respectful
to each other. People shared their thoughts
and exchanged addresses and literature.
WVA
representatives Swami B.V. Sridhar
and Lalita Madhava Prabhu presented the
WVA magazine and CD
to all the participants.
Altogether the
Summit was a wonderful occasion. |
