On the first day, when we were speaking in the park, after the discourse one gentleman has said that:

“You are speaking only namam, but not philosophy.”

I said:

“Yes. Quite true. If you are anxious to hear philosophy then you can hear. But many of the people who are here are anxious to hear about namam. So I spoke namam.”

This namam preaching is not out of philosophical course. It is a philosophy.

There is one karma-yoga, and one gyana-yoga, and the third is bhakti-yoga.

Karma-yoga – whatever the activities we perform, they should be approved by the Lord. And we must not harm anybody. You must help others, not only human beings, even the birds, beasts and the trees. All. We must serve all. We must help all. We must perform yajnas. Dravya-yajna, yoga-yajna, jnana-yajna – three types of yagyas. Out of it now dravya-yajna we perform. And by that gradually we can know about jnana-yajna – knowledge. And then after that:

brahma bhuta prasanatma.

If one attains that stage – the prasanatma.

Na socati na kanksati

He is free from anxieties, free from sufferings, free from wantings. He is always happy. Whether profit or loss he is happy.

Mad bhaktim labhate param.

That is not the only aim. The aim is to practice bhakti-yoga. Bhakti means service. The Lord who accepts our service is eternal. One who offers service is eternal. And whatever the action is done by a devotee, his service, that service is eternal. So the Lord is eternal, service is eternal, and the servant is eternal. And this is called bhakti-yoga.

In Kali-yuga bhakti-yoga should be encouraged because people have no physical strength. People can not undergo any difficulties. They cannot perform penance and austerity and yajnam. Nothing. The only action they can do is very simple and that action is nama-sankirtan. Repeat namam. If we repeat namam then we can have the summum bonum.

And repeating namam – this was discussed by Chaitanya Mahaprabhu in Kasi where all the people are engaged in knowledge. Empiric knowledge. They say: “aham brahmasmi, tat tvam asi, prajnanam brahma, (inaudible)” – these are all the mantras they repeat. They never say Krishna, Rama, Govinda, Acyuta. The God has got hundred and thousands of names. Those names they never repeat.

Now there was a big congregation of all sannyasis. One thousand sannyasis – they met in one place because a wealthy devotee invited all the sannyasis for food. Chaitanya Mahaprabhu was also a sannyasi. He was also asked and he came. And when all the sannyasis met, Prakasananda Sarasvati to whom all these thousands sannyasis follow asked Chaitanya Mahaprabhu. Krishna Chaitanya is his sannyasa name. Now he asked:

“Swamiji. You are a sannyasi. You belong to our cult. Sannyasi cult. The function of a sannyasi is to:

vedanta vakyesu sada ramayantah
kaupina vantah kalu bagya antah

He must have complete renunciation. He should give up all the enjoyments. And renunciation. With full renunciation he must discuss Vedanta. He must hear Vedanta from his guru. And remember it. But a sannyasi is not allowed to dance, to sing or to beat mridanga. But I find these three with you. It is called tauryatrika. A sannyasi should not sing, should not dance, should not beat drums. But you do this. All these ignorant fellows – you combine, you dance, you sing, you repeat. Is it sannyas dharma? Do you follow sannyas dharma?”

Then Mahaprabhu humbly told the sannyasis:

“Sir. When I took sannyasa from my spiritual master then I requested my Guru to teach me Vedanta. But my Guru said:

“You have no sufficient knowledge to understand Vedanta. You are a murkha. How can you understand Vedanta. Vedanta was isvara-vakya. It is the dictation of the Supreme Lord. As a sound it has come. How can you understand Vedanta? I will give you one mantra. You always recite that mantra. Whatever you find by discussing Vedanta, now you repeat mantra, you will enjoy the sublime bliss. Repeat this.”

Now according to Guru’s order I obeyed and now I repeat that mantra. When I repeated mantra then I lost my independence, lost my… – tongue always speaking, always repeating – I cannot control my tongue. I cannot control my hand and legs, they are always dancing. The tongue is always singing, I cannot control it. And my mind is disturbed. I sir, I have gone mad. Because if anybody asks any question directly, I will give direct reply – I say Hare Krishna. I fall down on the ground unconscious. And I laugh, I weep, I feel, due to ecstasy I feel madness. And no control upon my body. I lost my control. What mantra?

kiba mantra dila, gosai, kiba tara bala
japite japite mantra karila pagala

Then I appealed to my Guru.

“Gurudeva. What mantra have you given me? A mantra should control the mind.

mananat trayate iti mantrah

But your mantra made me completely mad. I am not under my control. I haven’t got mind under my control. People say:

“Nimai pandit was a great scholar. How has he become mad now?”

It is only due to the mantra. Then Guru said:

“No. You have not gone mad. You have realized the Supreme Bliss. The nectarian bliss that you realize is needed for all. If anybody repeats namam without committing any offence, that nama will gradually bring them to this stage. Now you made your life sublime. And repeat that mantra! Those who hear that namam from you – they will become sublime.””

So Mahaprabhu, he explained. Then of course they were not convinced. Then Mahaprabhu said: “My guru has never asked me to hear Vedanta or speak about Vedanta, though I was a learned scholar. I have defeated so many great scholars. I have no knowledge? No. I have got knowledge. But guru says:

“You have no required knowledge to discuss Vedanta.”

Vedanta is isvara-vakya. Mahaprabhu established that Vedanta was not written by any human being. It was written by Krishna Dvaipayana Vedavyasa. Vedavyasa is incarnation of Lord Krishna. He has written this. We don’t find anything wrong in it. Everything is quite right. Cent per cent right. But unless we are blessed by the Lord we cannot understand it.”

Now. “Why should you not discuss Vedanta?”

“Because I am unfit. My guru said: “You are unfit! So you are not allowed to discuss. You repeat namam.””

“He was the great scholar and how can we reject him as unfit?”

Yet now, he said:

“If you allow me to speak Vedanta…”

He told Vedanta. And by listening to that Vedanta all the sannyasis were happy and they said: “Yes. Quite true. What you have told we appreciate it. But at the same time we belong to a sect of Sankara sannyasis. So our cult may not approve it. But we approve it. And till now we have never uttered Hare Krishna Govinda Rama, but from today onwards we will repeat that namam. Because it is approved by Vedanta.”

Mahaprabhu thought while returning to Puri: “I came to Kasi with a heavy burden. I have now distributed to all freely. That heavy luggage I carried, that luggage I have now distributed to all freely.”

Mahaprabhu has come to this world to distribute this pure devotion. And in that pure devotion nama-sankirtan is the foremost. Mahaprabhu said: “Only through nama-sankirtan one can reach the sublime stage.”

And how to repeat nama-sankirtan? He must repeat nama-sankirtan through the advise of a Guru. One must have complete faith in this subject – bhakti. And if we perform bhakti:

ko dharmah sarva dharmanam bhavatah paramo matah
kin japan muchyate jantur-janma samsara-bandhanat

This is a question asked by Dharmaraja, Yudishthira Maharaja, who in his life never spoke lie, never harmed anybody. Dharmaraja. He is called Dharmaraja. He asked this question to Bhisma whom we consider a mahajana.

You know, our religion is followed, or taught, or practiced by 12 mahajanas. They are 12 acaryas. Who are they? Svayambhu – Brahma, Narada, Shambhu – Siva, Kumara – cathusana: one is Sanak, Sanatana, Sanandan, Sanat-kumara – these are the four manasika-putras – children of Brahma. Svayambhu, Narada, Shambhu, Kumara, Kapila- Kapilacharya. Devahuti – Kapilacarya. Manu – Svayabhuva Manu. Prahlada, Janaka, Bhishma, Bali. And Sukadeva Goswami. And Yama-dharmaraja. These are the 12 mahajanas who propagate this line of devotion or bhagavat-dharma.

dharmam tu sakshad bhagavat-pranitam
na vai vidur rishayo napi devah

Nobody knows about dharma. Even the sages also don’t know dharma. They have different views.

na casav rsir yasya matam na bhinnam

And the Vedas also. And all the religious sects we find – they have got different views. Different views. And the sages have got different views.

I have only one way to follow that is followed by mahajanas.

dharmasya tattvam nihitam guhayam

It is very secret. Nobody knows dharma. Everybody speaks of dharma. It has become a profession everywhere. Throughout the world. Dharma. Without Dharma nobody is there. Everybody is in Dharma and in this Dharma they fight. Everywhere you find different types of Dharmas they follow. But this will be the nature of Kali, the age of wrangling. And out of this, the surest way and the easiest way was selected by Sri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu who is Krishna. Who in Dvapara-yuga was Lord Krishna. He is the same Lord Krishna. Now in Navadvip he became Krishna Chaitanya. And now he speaks in Kasi to all the sannyasis. When they heard his argument, though they were learned scholars they could not speak or argue anything about it, because all of them were made speechless. Of all the sannyasis no one can open his mouth and talk against Chaitanya Mahaprabhu and argue with him. 1000. All sannyasis were there. Nobody.

Because he was the Lord. Whatever shabda-brahma… Para-brahma Sri Chaitanya – sabda-brahma Sri Chaitanya. Whatever he speaks, whatever the Lord speaks, Chaitanya speaks it is the word that should be accepted. There is no difference between his body and his sound. Whatever he speaks. Sabda-brahma. He is sabda-brahma. He is para-brahma. Both are equal. So whatever Chaitanya Mahaprabhu says it should be accepted as it is the sound, it is the word what Vedas say, what Upanishads say. And the essence of all the Vedas, all the Upanishads is only hari-namam. It is hari-namam. And that harinama: he himself is harinama. He is the incarnation of nama. Now he speaks.

harer nama harer nama harer namaiva kevalam
kalau nasty eva nasty eva nasty eva gatir anyatha

And this harinamam one can receive not by reading the book. In books it was written:

Hare Krishna Hare Krishna Krishna Krishna Hare Hare
Hare Rama Hare Rama Rama Rama Hare Hare

No. You cannot get it there. You must hear it from a realized, absolute realized pure soul, or a devotee or a Vaisnava or a Sadhu. And from him… You can meet him only if you are fortunate. It is told:

adau sraddha tatah sadhu-sango

One who has got complete faith towards the scriptures, towards bhagavata, Srimad bhagavatam and with all our revealed scriptures – who has got faith upon these texts and who believes whatever the bhagavata says is true. Then only he will search, he will go out and search for a bhagavata, a devotee. And he must approach humbly and beg him:

“Sir. I surrender to you. Now I am ignorant. I do not know what is philosophy and what is to be done and what not. I have never possessed any good qualities. I am ignorant. Now I am surrendered to you. Now you please bless me with that harinama mantra. You please bless me.”

Then he will bless with that mantra. And that mantra – he will tell you how to perform bhajan. And because he is well-versed, he has clear understanding and he is pure in heart. He has no desires.

anyabhilasita sunyam

He has no desires. Even dharma, artha, kama, moksa also. Never demands. What he demands?

na dhanam na janam na sundarim kavitam va jagadisa kamaye
mama janmani jamanisvare bhavatad bhaktir ahaituki tvayi

“I only want your devotion, service sir! I don’t want wealth. I don’t want beauty. I don’t want to enjoy knowledge. Nothing. Nothing for enjoyment. Nothing material I want.”

“What do you want?”

“I want, if I am born again and again all right, I am ready to accept rebirth, but may I have devotion. That devotion. Pure devotion towards you.”

So in Mahaprabhu siksa you have heard the translation. And though it may be not perfect, yet you have heard the translation. What is that translation?

na dhanam na janam na sundarim kavitam va jagadisa kamaye
mama janmani jamanisvare bhavatad bhaktir ahaituki tvayi

Ahaituki bhakti. Causeless devotion. Causeless devotion. Why do you do devotion? Why do you repeat namam? Why do you do puja? Why do you perform penance? What is a cause? He says:

“No cause.”

A devotee has no cause to show that I am leading or speaking or practicing namam. He cannot say. He says: “It is my duty. I am the soul. I am eternally your servant. My duty is to repeat namam. As you told in Gita

satatam kirtayanto mam yatantas ca drdha-vratah

“Arjuna! One who repeats my name always. I have ordered that he will be free from the influence of Maya.””

mam eva ye prapadyante mayam etam taranti te

We are under the influence of the deluding potency – Maya. What is Maya? Maya is deluding us. It shows one thing, but it does other thing. It is like cinema. In cinema we see the pictures. We see pictures. Innocent ladies or women when they see one person is murdering another person and that fellow is weeping, weeping and everybody is weeping seeing the scenery. But actually this scenery is maya. And a man says:

“Why do you weep?”

“He is killing innocent person.”

“(laughs)Nobody is killing none. No killer is there. Nobody is killed. As it is only a picture. There is nothing”

So also in this world we are ignorant. We do not know what we are doing. We do not know what we eat, what we cloth, what we construct building. What for? We do not know. But we labor hard. Day and night we labor hard. For whom are you doing this? Why you are doing this?

He never ask questions.

Why are you doing this? So much labor. What for? You don’t require anything. But what do you want? An American lady in Italy in first year, one lady said:

“Please bless me. Oh, you are a saint.”

I said:

“How could you know that I am a saint?”

“Please bless me.”

Then the husband has said:

“What blessing do you want? You have got your husband. You have got children. You have got number of buildings. Your health is quite all-right. All are keeping well. And you are enjoying plenty of happiness. What happiness you want?”

Then she said.

“All are there but I am never feeling happy.”

Quite true. What is that happiness? Woman in spite of all the wealth, and all the family members, and all the buildings, and everything is all-right, and she is not feeling well. Why? Because this is all maya. This is all maya. Within one second they will be evaporated. They cannot stay here. They are not eternal. These are not eternal. Like one having a dress of a king. Now he sits on the throne in the theater. He is acting like a king. When he shows action he must act like a king. Portion of some king. How king used to speak, how to sit, how to act, how to fight, how to keep his sword and with this sword how to do movements. Everything he exhibits. But actually it is only a show. Show. And after it is over, then he is an ordinary man. He is ordinary. He is not a king. But for a moment he acts as a king. He must allow the gazers, those who look at him, they should think: “Oh yes. He is a king.” He is acting like a king. Speaking like a king. Ruling like a king. But it is only actuated drama. It is only Maya.

That Maya is now dominating the whole world. Everywhere that Maya is dominating. You do not know who is yours, what is yours, wherefrom you have come, what does belong to you. Does it belong to you? You do not know. Yet you think:

“Yes. Mine. This is mine. That is mine. This body. My body. I am body. My father, my mother, my wife, my children, my house, my building, my country. Everything.”

ma kuru dhana jana yauvana garvam
harati nimesatkalah sarvam

Nimesa. In eyelids (inaudible) time it will disappear. Everything will disappear. It is only maya. It is not truth.

We cannot understand that truth. To understand that truth philosophy is wanted. That philosophy. People are anxious to read no philosophy, and they cannot understand philosophy unless they completely surrender to the philosophy. They must completely surrender. What is that philosophy? Philosophy of bhagavat. What is that bhagavat? Bhagavat is the function of the jiva with the Supreme Lord. And the servant, service and the master. Relationship between the three is eternal. So they discuss so many stories, so many incarnations. In all these incarnations the Lord appears in this world only to establish a truth and destroy untruth. And he preaches

satyam bruyat priyam bruyat na bruyat satyam apriyam

Don’t speak lie. Speak truth. And try to know that truth. What is that truth? That truth.

om purnam adah purnam idam purnat purnam udachyate
purnasya purnam adaya purnam evavashishyate

He is the whole. He is purna. That purna you have to realize. You have come to this world only to realize that. To serve that.

man mana bhava, mad bhakto bhava, mad yaji bhava

“Always keep your mind on me. Day and night. Whatever you do from morning till night, link all the activities with me. You establish a link with me. Because I am the creator. I am the protector. I am the savior. I am the destroyer. And this is – wherever you go, wherefrom you have come, wherefrom this world has come, and what is development in time, everything.”

He is omnipotent. He is omniscient. He does. Through his blessings we can see the world. Such a beautiful world we see. But we cannot understand that. To understand it there are many revealed scriptures. We must submit ourselves to the scriptures. And follow it.

But those who follow the empiric knowledge. They read, they follow, but never follow. They read, they always read. And they want to establish themselves as the supreme power. They say: “We are. “Aham. Aham. I am the Lord.” Everywhere in this world thinks: “I am the Lord. I am the proprietor. I am the manager. I am everything.” Actually he is not that. It is only an imposed idea which gave them some sort of satisfaction. And when we forget this, when we give this up, then we must come to this knowledge.

What is that knowledge?

Descending knowledge. That is the knowledge we can obtain through the blessings of the Lord.

Knowledge we obtain through our senses. These senses, deluding senses, cannot guide us in a proper way. And we must give up all this sense knowledge and sense understanding and sense enjoyment and surrender ourselves to the Supreme Lord. And if we surrender, the dictation will come from that side. And through his dictations, through his blessing we can understand him. I can realize him. This knowledge is called transcendental knowledge.

All the religious teachers, so-called teachers, they never understand this. They think that whatever we understand is this:

“Whatever through our senses we realize it is a fact.”

No, sir. All your senses are stupid senses, or innocent and ignorant senses. They are not clean. They are not complete. Incomplete. With that incomplete knowledge how can you establish the truth?

The truth is always there. Truth is always eternal. It was not yesterday, and today I see, and tomorrow I cannot see.

Body is like that. We are all here for the present but hundred years back none was here. No such figures are there. And after 50 or 100 years no such figures will be there. What will happen? They will die. They will disappear. But the truth will never disappear. The truth is there. Truth is eternal. Yesterday, hundred years back, thousand years back – this truth is there. And now, truth is here. And after 1000 million years the truth will be there. Truth has no construction, no destruction. The untruth has construction, and untruth has growth, untruth has disappearance, destruction.

We know this knowledge. Even the greatest scientists also, they discuss this. And they invent so many things, in detail, so many things they invent. But they cannot survive long. They will die. They will die. They speak as long as they survive. How to survive?

srnvantu visve amrtasya putrah

Our Veda says. Vaidhik knowledge says:

“Oh. You are the children of that immortal.”

You are all immortal. You have no birth. No death. You are all the eternal servants of the Lord. Why are you afraid of births and deaths? Why are you afraid? Always you are afraid of something. No. When you surrender to the Lord; asoka, abhaya – you need not feel sorry, you need not feel unhappy. You need not weep for that what is lost or be anxious to have something more. No.

na socati na kanksati samah sarvesu bhutesu

He sees – yes. “I find no difference.” And that atma is dwelling everywhere.

Now people work hard from morning till night. Why? Not to realize the atma. To know the atma the body is necessary. And if we die who will be alive? Body is necessary only to realize that atma, to serve that atma, to remember that atma and to do service of that atma. How do you do it? That will be explained by your spiritual master.

adau sraddha tatah sadhu-sango tha bhajana-kriya

Then you must learn how to do bhajan. What is bhajan? Not only “Hare Krishna, Hare Krishna” bhajan. It includes so many things. Then what are those so many things? All your activities, all your speeches, and all the food you take – everything should be familiar, should be congenial and should be for devotional purpose. And by that, the combination of Hari-namam will help you.

But you never follow any regulations and rules. And you never follow that which is helpful to your devotion. All the activities, all the places, all these subjects you should discuss. Then only it is favorable to devotion. When it is unfavorable you must give it up.

bhakti-yogena manasi samyak pranihite ‘male apasyat purusam purnam

If you control your senses through devotion, through the divine master, or the Supreme Lord’s blessings then you will realize the truth. That sublime stage you can reach. Then make your life sublime. We must come to that stage.

He says then:

Adau sraddha tatah sadhu-sango ‘tha bhajana-kriya tato ‘nartha-nivrttih

If you do bhajan all your anarthas will be cleared. What are those anarthas? There are many anarthas. You do not know who you are. And really if you do bhajan then you can realize it to some extent. And what is favorable for your devotion you will accept it. What is unfavorable for your devotion you will reject it. And the glimpse of the truth you can have.

Do. Continue that. With the nistha. Regular practice gradually brings you to the attachment and to the bhava.

Nishta, ruci, asakti and bhava.

When you come to bhava then you are reaching the border of devotion and the devotional life. And just in the morning time, the darkness you were afraid of is moving out. Because you did not know what will happen. I cannot see anything in darkness. When the darkness goes away, at dawn and prior to sunrise, when that stage comes, I am free from fear. And I can see clearly. Everything is clear. And in that clear stage I can see the Sun rising. When the sun rises – then I can derive all the happiness. That is called prema. Bhava and then prema. That stage we must get. How to get? By sadhana. We must do sadhana.

Why? The teachers, they never explain that kama and prema. What is kama? Kama is compared with the darkness. Full darkness. And the prema is compared with the full sunlight. Now that sunrise will never come to you, through which you can see everything. Unless the sun rises how can you get the sunlight? What is that sunlight? Sun is compared with the Lord Krishna. And if you get Krishna’s light, then all your darkness, all evil, anything evil, not a spark of evil will dominate your mind and intellect. You are free from that. You will be pure.

That light you cannot see. You cannot have that light. Without your craving for that, without your practice, without your complete surrender, without your complete surrender to the spiritual master and complete surrender to the Lord we cannot able to understand it.

Though by reading books… There are so many books nowadays. So many people write books. Everybody writes books. It is a business. It is only vomiting and digested matter. When our food is not properly digested then we vomit. The people who write books, who speak, who practice, and teach others – their words are like undigested matter. Vomiting. And if anybody eats that undigested matter then he will suffer. Because they are wasted. Now all these writers, now it has become a business to write books. As Swami maharaja has told that my books should be preached. You must distribute my books. Of course it has some meaning. But now many people write books only to borrow from others. They are cheats. They deceive us. They deceive themselves and deceive the reader. They cannot come to the point of understanding of their misleading them.

By reading so many books his mind will be disturbed. He cannot have faith in one thing, in the speech of one person. Because these are all the words of undigested matter.

Our Prabhupada, Srila Bhaktisiddhanta Sarasvati Goswami said:

“These are ama udgara.”

Whatever you eat and you cannot digest and you vomit, that vomit is their writing. They are not thinking of the matter, how to realize the matter, how to practice the matter. He must proceed forth. But he is not proceeding. He only deceived others by preaching something.

Now we have so many people. They are very fond of listening to Radha-Krishna pastimes and rasa-krida pastimes. If they speak, then everybody is a slave of kama. That kama, lust. He is the slave of lust. When he hears this:

“Oh. Very good. Exciting! Exciting!”

But actually it is not prema. They cannot realize prema. They must go from class one, class two, class three, class four, class five, class six, seven, eight and nine to become a master of arts. Not high jump. They cannot. And this syllabus which is discussed should be discussed by earnest student. And if it is told to a young child of class one, class two – what will he understand? He will understand nothing. And it is not… Our religious teachers, they were previously realized religious teachers, our acharyas – they never told anything when a student is unfit. Fit. Whether he is fit to listen?

Even in bhagavat they say

yadi nah srutaye kshamam

All the Nava-yogendras, when they reach Nimi Maharaja

ata atyantikam kshemam pricchamo bhavato ‘naghah
samsare ‘smin kshanardho ‘pi sat-sangah sevadhir nrinam

Now all the devotees, you are all devotees, first class devotees, you have come towards our house. We feel as if we received a big pot of golden coins. We are happy. Now we ask you what is the supreme benefit, and supreme realization, and supreme wealth one can have?

yam labdhva caparam labham manyate

That wealth, that is called, that wealth please explain. And that also if we are considered to be fit to hear please tell. (laughs) Now people are not in that position. They are degraded. Now people are degraded.

prayenalpayusah sabhya kalav asmin yuge jana
mandah sumanda-matayo manda-bhagya hy upadrutah

Now detoriated. Everything detoriated.

In the Swami Maharaja’s period was different. Those who came to him, those who studied with him, those who followed him, those followers now after his demise, 50 years is about to be, so after 50 years the generation changes. Now people cannot understand it. Their understanding capacity has come down. So, gradually detoriation in their brain. They cannot realize. They cannot follow. They cannot practice. They cannot understand. For that we need not blame anybody. Only, it is Kali-yuga. The Kali. It is the function of Kali. Who can control Kali? The Kali has come only to rule. Now he must be allowed to rule. God has sent Kali now to rule. We are born in Kali-yuga. We have to suffer. But only one profit is – that if we remember –

kaler dosa-nidhe rajan asti hy eko mahan gunah

All the evils. The accumulation of evils, and one worthy feature is, only if we repeat namam Hare Krishna then we will come further. We will counter Maya. And that Harinama we never repeat. Our tongue never repeats Hare Krishna. They repeat so many words. They never practice.

Hare Krishna.
