Once again, an attempt was made to harmonize the different issues of the different branches of Gaudiya Vaishnavism in Mayapur. Recently, a great chunk of land was taken away from ISKCON to facilitate an area for the Mayapur administration and beautification of the entry to Mayapur. It was also lamented that despite so many efforts, the hotel business of alcohol, meat and other illicit activities along the Bhaktisiddhanta road and Hulor Ghat could not be stopped. Some very strange politics around the ghat could not clearly be identified and require more investigation.
Swami B.A. Paramadvaiti from VRINDA Mission, submitted a Master Plan (via Kamal prabhu) for the beautification of the entrance of Mayapur. The environmental impact of the huge complex built right in the entrance of the ISKCON property, completely changes the Mayapur landscape. It was also lamented that incredible crimes are taking place right inside Mayapur conducted by the land mafia, who is threatening the safety of many innocent investors. The brutal attack of Sadhu prabhu by Mahabandhu and his hired gundhas shows how bad the situation has become.
In an uncontrolled manner, high-rise buildings are shooting up everywhere, transforming the land of Mayapur’s rising moon into a chaotic urban development, without any planning for the environment. Even though money is expended in astronomic proportions, a decent handling of the waste has not been achieved, leading to constant burning of poisonous materials.
Meeting around the oval table in ISKCON, many of the concerned leaders of the Gaudiya Math questioned Srila Jayapataka Swami about any possible remedy for the problems.
Only a joint Master Plan, which protects the interests of all Gaudiya Maths, will be able to harmonize and create the Mayapur Dham that Srila Bhaktivinod Thakur envisioned when he conceived the Adbhuta Mandir. This Master Plan has not been jointly developed, so everybody is making Master Plans for their own mission, neglecting the common needs for transportation, parking, access, road fixing, traffic signs, and even simple ordinary safety for both the local devotees and for pilgrims. Many traffic accidents already took place on the Bhaktisiddhanta road.
It is about time that we use our human intelligence to create a place which actually can be admired by people around the world. The WVA-VVRS in connection with the Braj Vrindavan Heritage Alliance, for example, has made a master Plan developed by the Belgium architect Luc Stevens for the Vrindavan Municipality. Considering the historical importance of Lord Caitanya for India and especially for Mayapur Dham, it should not be difficult to get political support and establish rules and regulations to stop this madness of uncontrolled development.
We hope that by the time of Gaura Purnima 2014 we will be able to present you some better news, because for now many questions remain unanswered.
